2012 Pritzker Prize: Wang Shu

Wang Shu, Chinese architect and founder of Amateur Architecture Studio, has been just announced as the recipient of the 2012 Pritzker Prize.
The Pritzker Prize’s purpose is “to honor a living architect whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision, and commitment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture”.
In my opinion Wang Shu’s architecture presents a contemporary and progressive approach that acknowledges the rich tradition of Chinese architecture. As the future generations of Chinese architects are influenced by his architecture, a generation that will be an active part of China’s growth, he will indirectly improve how millions will live in the next few years.
He calls his office Amateur Architecture Studio, but the work is that of a virtuoso in full command of the instruments of architecture — form, scale, material, space and light - Karen Stein, Pritzker Prize jury.

The Holcim Awards 2011 for Asia Pacific Winners

1st prize 01

The Asia Pacific winners of the Holcim Awards for sustainable construction were recently announced in Singapore. The Holcim Awards is an international competition that recognizes innovative projects and future-oriented concepts on regional and global levels. The competition is designed to encourage architects, planners, engineers and project owners to go beyond conventional notions of sustainable construction in their work and to harmonize ecological, social and economic concerns. Projects and concepts in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and related fields are eligible for entry in the competition. 1st prize 02

The Holcim Awards Gold 2011 for Asia Pacific (USD 100,000) was awarded to a project that upgrades a traditional building method with effective low-tech measures through engineering and design. The Earthen School Tipu Sultan Merkez, in a small village near Lahore, Pakistan and designed by architect Eike Roswag of Ziegert Roswag Seiler Architekten Ingenieure, Germany, is constructed using a cob (clay, sand, water, and straw) lower-floor combined with an upper floor made of earth-filled bamboo walls. Intense research on cob construction resulted in a significant increase in strength and durability, and extended maintenance intervals compared to former approaches.

2nd prize 01

Holcim Awards Silver went to the conversion of a former textile factory and adjacent land into a 1.4ha agricultural production site and retail outlet in central Bangkok. The Urban Farm Urban Barn designed by a project team led by Isavaret Tamonut of TTH Trading reintroduces elements of self-sufficiency while also reconnecting food production and consumption.

3rd prize 01

Holcim Awards Bronze was awarded to a team led by architect Ken Yeang of T R Hamzah & Yeang International for a 14-level commercial and retail building located in Malaysia’s federal administrative city of Putrajaya. The building brings together state-of-the-art technologies appropriate for high-quality use in two interconnected towers that use vegetation to actively reduce energy consumption, provide solar shading, and create comfortable spaces considering all requirements of utilization.

IAI Nasional Award 2011 untuk IAI Daerah Banten

Pada hari sabtu tanggal 12 November kami mewakili IAI Banten (Bidang Penghargaan dan Sayembara) mendampingi para juri IAI Nasional yang diketuai oleh Andra Matin beserta Imelda Akmal mengunjungi lokasi dari para nominator penghargaan IaI Nasional yang berada di daerah Banten.

My Note:

Catatan ringan dari saya bukan untuk menilai kapasitas dari para nominator,ada yang mengganjal dalam diri saya; kalau dilihat karya nominasi ini mungkin karena letaknya saja berada di daerah Banten,bukan para desainer/arsiteknya; atau mungkin para desainer/arsitek daerah Banten lebih banyak karyanya di Jakarta atau daerah lainnya??; atau banyak potensi dari desainer/arsitek Banten yang tidak terakomodasi dalam wadah IAI Banten??atau mungkin kami baru saja berdiri dan lebih banyak konsolidasi ke dalam dan menguatkan barisan terlebih dahulu?? ;banyak sekali kemungkinan lainnya.

Mudah-mudahan dari event award IAI Nasional ini menggugah para Desainer /Arsitek daerah Banten lebih bergairah untuk lebih banyak berkarya lagi dan semoga Bisa menjadi Tuan di Rumah Sendiri.  Selamat Berkarya!!!!
