paris and london-based firm matteo cainer architects has received an honorable mention for a proposal they submitted
to the busan opera house inernational design competition for busan, south korea. located at the north port,
the building is meant to serve as a performing art center with theaters optimized for high class operas,
concerts and other art related activities which would appeal to people of all ages and social backgrounds while
promoting an interaction between music, nature and architecture.

view of structure from nearby body of water

the form is based on the camellia flower, the official flower of busan. the dense tectonic petals create a visual connection
between the sea and the city. the cantilevering levels give visitors a scenic view of both the waterfront and the city behind.
the building is made of glass, revealing the structural components while modulating the penetrating light.
contrasting the qualities of the transparent material is a variety of vegetation both around the complex as well as inside
the main gallery space both for environmental and humanistic purposes. to integrate the surrounding space,
strategically located large digital screens display current events, but can also be used to project live open air concerts,
turning the side of the building into a theatre.

new york based asymptote architecture is nearing completion of their yas hotel project,
in abu dhabi, uae. the yas hotel is a 500-room, 85,000-square-meter complex which is
due to open on october 30, 2009 to coincide with the formula 1 etihad airways,
abu dhabi grand prix.

the yas hotel is part of the ambitious 36-billion-dollar yas marina development
and accompanying formula 1 raceway circuit, which is also near completion.

the main feature of the project's design is a 217-meter expanse of sweeping, curvilinear
forms constructed of steel and 5,800 pivoting diamond-shaped glass panels. this grid
shell component affords the building an architecture comprised of an atmospheric
like veil that contains two hotel towers and a link bridge constructed as a monocoque
sculpted steel object passing above the formula 1 track that makes its way through
the building complex. the grid-shell visually connects and fuses the entire complex
together while producing optical effects and spectral reflections that play against the
surrounding sky, sea and desert landscape. the architecture as a whole 'performs' as
both an environmentallyresponsive solution as well as an architecture of spectacle
and event.

designboom recently visited the head studio of BIG architects in copenhagen, denmark to witness the design process of the
internationally renowned firm led by bjarke ingels. the office is currently comprised of 80 staff while the new york location
introduces an additional 20 people to the international practice. structured as a flat hierarchy, individuals are placed into teams
assigned to different projects. team members are selected based on a combination of cultural origins and the competition's location
and remain with the project until its conclusion. model making is regularly used to explore building ideas from initial
conceptual stages throughout the design process, ensuring the development is transparent and understood across the board.
upon completion, models are displayed throughout the office or stored in the in-house archive room.

computer stations are placed in rows in an open area encouraging continuous communication during project development.
glass enclosed breakout spaces are used for team brainstorm sessions and a 'skype window' to the new york office provides
opportunities for international discussions. collaborative study trips with other firms and visiting lecturers for the 'BIG picture'
monthly internal event provides educational opportunities. another initiative, 'BIG lecture' encourages resident architects to teach
personal strengths to fellow employees for contribution to future projects.

morphosis architects: giant interactive group corporate headquarters

internationally-renowned practice morphosis architects has completed 'giant interactive group corporate headquarters',
a dynamic complex of multiple functions in shanghai, china.  composed of two campus wings - the east and
west - the design fully integrates its form and framework into the site, folding in and out with the landscape plane.

positioned at the edge of a man-made lake, the project engages in an open dialogue with its augmented ground plane,
undulating in form to a bold cantilever over the water. the west campus features an oscillating green roof that climbs
up to the edge of the office building, providing thermal mass and reducing heat gain and cooling expenditures.
the grounds lining the edge of the lake steps down into a series of wide steps to encourage public and social activity
along the waterfront.

clad in charcoal grey panels, the snaking east campus office building houses three distinct zones:
open, non-hierarchical office space; private offices, and executive suites. in addition, a library, auditorium,
exhibition space and cafe are arranged into the lifted landscape. the west-campus hosts a multi-purpose
sports court, swimming pool, and fitness spaces for employees.

an enclosed walkway serves as the main circulation spine of the headquarters,
meandering through the office buildings and connecting the east and west campus
together in a elevated catwalk.
